ADVENTURE CLUB
Adventure Club is a before and after school day care for Barry School students from third to fifth grade. Care is provided from 6:30 a.m. until school starts and then again from the time school is dismissed until 6:00 p.m. Adventure Club is closed during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and during the summer. Fees at this time are $10.00 per day per student. This fee is required no matter how many days the service is used. A regular week is $50.00 per child. There are some days that the service remains open when school is closed. The fee for those days is $20.00 per child and is only paid if the child attends that day. On Teacher PLC Days, the regular daily fee will be required.
There are games, toys, coloring activities, and books for the children to use as well as outdoor play when weather permits or gym activities for more energetic activities. On some full days, there are also field trips. The children can also do homework if they want.
Adventure Club currently has openings available. Anyone wishing to sign up for the program or having questions about Adventure Club may call Debbie North, site coordinator, at 436-9623, ext. 3114.

YOUTHFRIENDS
YouthFriends is an adult volunteer mentoring program where school children are matched with a caring adult. YouthFriend volunteers are screened and trained to work with our students on a weekly basis. These volunteers give an hour or more of their time each week as Lunch Buddies, Tutors, Mentors, Reading Pals, or Classroom Helpers. If you or anyone you know would like to become a YouthFriend volunteer at Barry School, please contact one of our building coordinators, Jami Hamilton-Ansley or Christine Hoskins.
VOLUNTEER THE YOUTHFRIENDS WAY!
IT'S FUN...IT'S FLEXIBLE...IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

STUDENT RECYCLING
Mrs. Koch's fourth grade class has taken on the huge responsibility of collecting the entire building's recyclable paper materials. This not only generates money for our school, it also helps to protect our planet!
Click here to see the current recycling statistics from Barry School.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Council elections are held during the first month of the school year. The eighth grade students can participate in the officer election, as well as the representative election. Sixth and seventh grade students may only participate in the class representative election. These yearly elections help tofill twenty-four positions, with middle school staff and students participating in the voting process.
Each year Student Council sponsors spirit and holiday activities, and provides for families in need at
Christmas by hosting the Coin Harvest and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. We
sponsor Read Across America Day. We also host a school dance at the end of the year
in May.

TIES
The 8th grade students at Barry School participate in a program developed several
years ago. The program, called TIES, stands for Teens in Education's Support. It
pairs high achieving 8th graders with K-3 teachers, at Pathfinder Elementary or Barry School, to support them in the classroom.
They may work with individual students in several ways. They may listen to them
read, work on flash cards, help them in writing, or even act as role models out on the
playground. They may also assist teachers with bulletin boards, cutting out letters, or
help with anything the teachers may need an extra hand with in their classrooms.
Students are selected on a rotating basis each quarter and miss their Friday
afternoon literature class. We have several prospective teachers in our TIES ranks.

Clash of the Classes
The middle school students at Barry are involved in a year-round competition. It's a challenge of brains as well as brawn, and any grade level can win if enough points are earned by the last day of school.
Activities for The Clash began with homecoming in September and include contests such as bobbing for apples, tug-of-war, a Fear Factor relay, the Pirate ship rowing race, a costume relay, dodge ball, and much, much more! Along with the physical competitions, grade levels each receive points for creativity on their class banners and points for honor roll and perfect attendance percentages.
All students are encouraged to participate, and it's always challenging, as well as entertaining!

Library Club
Middle school students are invited to join us once a month for book club after school. We read the book before our meeting, and then get together in the library for a discussion and snacks. In the past years, we have read Coraline (Neil Gaiman), The Christmas Barn (Davis), Lost and Found (Scraffman), and The Princess Academy (Shannon Hale), and many others. This year's members have chosen to read Twilight by Stephenie Myer.

Bullying Pledge
In both 2007 and 2008, the Barry Middle School Student Councils worked together with their sponsor, Carmen Marshall, to develop a short play and an inspirational pledge to prevent bullying at Barry School. They challenged the rest of the middle school students to refrain from bullying and to stop it whenever they see it happening. The following is the pledge that Student Council wrote, and all middle school students each year have pledged to live up to.
Barry School Bullying Pledge
I solemnly swear to do my best to abolish the bullying of individuals, not just at school, but wherever I pass. I will treat others the way I expect and deserve to be treated. I’m just as guilty as the person who is bullying if I see someone being harmed physically or verbally, and I choose to look the other way. As a student of Barry School, it is my responsibility to protect myself and my peers. I will choose to help others, respect others, and be in unison with others…always.

C.H.A.T.
This program is designed with several goals in mind: to eliminate as many zeros as possible on students' homework assignments, to provide a quiet, supervised work area for students, and to provide teacher help and tutoring for students who need it. All students are automatically enrolled in the Completing Homework And Tutoring (CHAT) program, and bus transportation is provided.
Parents of students who are assigned to CHAT to complete a homework assignment will receive a phone call on the day the work was missed. The student will attend CHAT on the following available day to complete the assignment without loss of credit. If the assignment is not turned in, OR if the student fails to attend the CHAT session, the score for the assignment will be "0". CHAT is held in the Barry School Library from 4:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. every Monday through Thursday evening (unless it is an early dismissal day.)
Students who are coming in for tutoring or help with homework without a teacher's request must bring a signed and dated note from a parent/guardian in order to stay for the CHAT session. Due to liability issues, phoned-in permission to stay for CHAT WILL NOT be accepted.
If you have questions about the new CHAT program, do not hesitate to call Ms. Rebecca Henshaw (ext. 3142) or Mr. Jeff Adams (ext. 3142) at 436-9623.
