1. All students will be able to display and recognize positive character traits.
2. Students will be able to develop and acquire positive character traits within themselves.
As part of the elementary Pirates R.O.C.K. character education program at Barry School, we like to recognize students who go out of their way to display a character trait.
When teachers see a child displaying the character trait for the month, they complete a “character brick”. The “character brick” is a paper cutout with the R.O.C.K. acronym on it. The teacher writes why the student received the brick, and the student takes the “rock” to the office. Every Monday either Ms. Henshaw or Mr. Doll draws names from each box, and those students have their names read over the intercom along with the character trait they displayed. After the students’ names are drawn, they come to the office and draw from the “rock pile”.
The rock pile consists of opportunities for students to be rewarded and display further character traits. Examples could include leading the pledge, being a room buddy, or helping in the office, cafeteria, or library.
We then take each rock that is drawn and add it to our “Rock Wall”, outside of Mr. Doll’s office, that displays all of our character traits.
