Professional Learning Communities
Learn about the plan to implement the Professional Learning Communities environment beginning with the 2008-09 school year.

Virtual Classroom
During the 2008 Fall Semester, the Platte County R-3 School District will be piloting an online learning program for high school students. Online learning courses use technology to design, deliver, support, and extend learning for students in grades 9-12 in the Platte County R-3 School District boundaries.

Online classes are structured just like conventional classes, with a few unique differences:

  • You will be more independent

Right from the beginning, you’ll have all the course materials available online.  The course syllabus includes assignments and due dates.  You will need to develop a work plan of what is due when and submit your work on time.  Your teacher will help keep you on schedule, answer your questions, and grade your work.
  • You will interact with your class primarily online

Your teacher will interact with you primarily through email, online discussions, and comments on your assignments. You will read your teacher’s feedback on your returned work, ask questions over email or through instant messaging, and participate in the online discussions.  You can also get questions answered over the telephone by calling your teacher during the teacher’s office hours.

  • You will go online to learn

Every course requires both online and offline work.  For instance, you will go online to watch multimedia presentations, do online exercises, or participate in online discussions.  Other times, you might go online to pick up an assignment, then study or work offline.  You might read a chapter from a book and write an essay, or do a set of problems and then submit them to your Online Instructor for grading.

What classes will be offered through the Online Learning Program?
The following courses will be available: Physiology, Young Adult Literature, Trigonometry, Ecology and Advanced Algebra.

Will students earn regular Platte County R-3 credit?
Yes!  All courses meet requirements for accreditation and count as credits toward graduation.

Who will teach the classes?
All instructors will be current Platte County R-3 School District staff members

Who can take the classes?
Any high school level student within the Platte County R-3 School District boundaries

How many students will be allowed to participate in the online program?
Ten (10) students per class will be the maximum enrollment for the program.

Do I physically have to sit in a school building to take a class?
Yes, the student will remain at school to take the online course.  The student will be assigned to a designated area to access their online course.  Online classes may be scheduled throughout the day, since the student will remain on campus.

How do I take quizzes and tests?
The majority of quizzes and assessments will be administered online.  However, students will be required to take the mid-term and final course exam in a proctored, classroom setting.

What are the systems and computer requirements for online classes?
The following are the minimum technical specifications needed to work outside the school day with our online learning platform – eCollege.

    • Windows 95,98, 2000, XP or compatible operation system:  MAC OS X
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher
    • 56K modem, broadband, or DSL connection
    • 64 MB RAM (higher preferred),  1 GB free disk space
    • Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat Reader
    • Sound Card with Speakers
    • Additional recommended free software:
      • Windows Media Player
      • PowerPoint Viewer 2003
      • Quicktime
      • RealPlayer

School Closing Information
In case of inclement weather, information can be obtained from the school district phone system by dialing 858-2162 and pressing "8" for school closing information. We will also put this information on the website front page. Area radio and television stations display this information, but not as quickly.

While the decision to close school or dismiss early will always be made as early as possible, the school district strongly urges you to make personal arrangements EARLY for your child. Please prepare for any emergency closings this year that might occur before or after the school day begins. Your child's safety is paramount, and we encourage you to give this some thought and converse with your child concerning this important matter.
