Professional Development

It is by teaching that we teach ourselves, by relating that we observe, by affirming that we examine, by showing that we look, by writing that we think, by pumping that we draw water into the well.
-
Henri-Frédéric Amiel (1821–1881), Swiss philosopher, poet.

Professional Development Committee
The Excellence in Education Act requires each school district to have a Professional Development Committee (PDC). PDC must work in collaboration with teachers and administrators for continuous school improvement. The primary function of the PDC can be summarized as follows:
- Identify instructional concerns and remedies for beginning and experienced teachers;
- Serve as a confidential consultant upon a teacher's request;
- Assess faculty needs and develop in-service opportunities for certified school staff; and
- Present to the proper authority, faculty suggestions, ideas, and recommendations pertaining to classroom instruction within the school district.

District Inservice
Fall 2008 District Inservice, "A Focus on Change "
John Antonetti is the former director of K-12 Curriculum in the Sheridan School District in Arkansas. He has had the great fortune of teaching at the elementary, middle and high school levels. John has also served as the supervisor for the Gifted Program in the 18 districts of the Northwest Arkansas Education Service Cooperative. John is an advocate of experiential education and recognizes that all learners learn best when they work together to solve real world problems in safe, cooperative environments. Mr. Antonetti is also the author of the book, Writing as a Measure and a Model of Thinking.
John has been a developer and a trainer in the process of classroom walkthroughs, a system for improving classroom instruction. He has worked with three districts that have won the nationally recognized Broad Prize for Urban Education. In working with Garden Grove, California and Aldine, Texas, his work focused on developing systemic writing programs, power standards and district assessments. Other onsite work has included student engagement, rigor and relavance, and high-yield best practices. In addition to large urban districts, John has partnered with smaller districts to bring about improvement in student achievement.

New Teacher Mentoring
The 1985 Missouri Excellence in Education Act (5CSR 80-00.010) requires establishment of professional development programs specifically for beginning teachers who have no prior teaching experience. According to law, school districts in Missouri must provide a professional development plan for each teacher who has no experience. This “beginning teacher support system” must include an entry-year mentor program.
