• In February 2017, during the 17.5 days school was in session, 7,480 books circulated, which more than doubled Paxton's February 2016 circulation of 3,051.
    • An average of 427 books circulated daily at Compass.
    • If one minute is spent per book shelving (checking through the books to check for repair needs, sorting the books, wiping off sticky books, going to the shelves--all without interruptions) that equates to 7.2 hours of shelving required daily.
    • A school day is 7.5 hours long, 7 hours when subtracting a lunch break.   (Shelving needs exceed the hours of the school day).
    • That was approximately 126 hours of shelving total for the month of February.
Parent & Student Volunteers worked  48  hours during February.
    • Susan 9-2 every Tuesday of month=20 hours
    • Heather 2 hour segments x3=6 hours
    • Polly every Tuesday and Thursday morning--starting mid February from 9-11=6 hours
    • Mrs. Kelley each Wed morning from 11:00-1:00= 8 hours
    • 4 5th grade student volunteers =8 hours
If all volunteers ONLY shelved books, then 126 hours-48 hours = 78 hours of shelving in February left to Librarian & Librarian Aide, which is about 4.5 hours of shelving daily left (that's 4.5 hours of just shelving with no interruptions).

When looking at a schedule of the school day:
8:35-9:35  an average of 80-130 students come into the Library to check out
a small group of students comes in daily with a high school helper to work
NO TIME POSSIBLE TO SHELVE DURING THIS TIME BLOCK
9:15   class begins and each 50 minute class ties up the Library aide for approximately 20 minutes
while Ms. Day is teaching, more students are needing help coming into Library multiple times throughout the day,
even on the student's scheduled Library class day.
Top Patron count (according to statistics) are from 2nd grade classes and 1st grade classes
(students who would not be self check out candidates).

  • Paxton Library's Circulation Statistics Usage Over Time

    Questions for Reflection:

Will Common Core emphasis increase nonfiction texts' circulation statistics?

Will lessons on Follett Shelf and Destiny log in increase Ebook circulation statistics?
