Platte City Middle School
We are off to a great start! I am really looking forward to this year and getting the opportunity to work with your child. I am very fortunate to work in a district that supports gifted education. Our district has three gifted teachers in the department; Lisa Thomsen (Barry K-8 and Hanna Gibson K-5 at Compass and Siegrist). I will be working with the gifted students at PCMS and I will also be working with the HS gifted students as a resource teacher. I am very excited to be able to help students and parents navigate their HS courses in preparation for graduation, college and careers.
Gifted education and working with gifted students is a passion! This is my 20th year in gifted and my 31st year in education. Gifted is actually a family passion; my mother started the gifted program in Excelsior Springs, many years ago.
My husband and I have 3 sons; so I wear the parent and educator hat when working with your child. "How would I want my children to prepare for academic success in HS and college?" I thoroughly enjoy my job; I learn something new each day and I get the opportunity to laugh at work!
My family life is always busy! We have three boys that are spread out in age (13 years apart). This has given my husband and I the opportunity to reflect on their educational needs and continue to evaluate the importance of preparing for HS and college. Our oldest son is an attorney, he and his wife live in Liberty with their two girls (Clara 8 and Anna 6). Dylan, our middle son, works for William Blair in Chicago and Canten, our youngest, is an academic Junior and a Redshirt Sophomore wrestler at the University of Missouri.
Rigor is an important word in our classroom. This includes developing a growth mindset to be prepared to meet educational challenges.
We are going to have a great year! Please feel free to email or call me if you have any questions about our class or gifted conversations.
I look forward to working with you this year - Jill
