Platte County School District is proud to announce its 2026 Teacher of the Year and Service Person of the Year recipients: Blaire Zessin, Reading Teacher at Barry Elementary, and Erica Hopper, Marketing and Recruitment Specialist at Northland Career Center. Both honorees were surprised with the announcements during celebrations held at their schools in early May.

Teacher of the Year: Blaire Zessin

Blaire Zessin has served in education for 24 years, all within the Platte County School District. At Barry Elementary, she has become known not only for her work as an exceptional reading teacher, but also for the care, leadership, and innovation she brings to the entire school community.

Her nomination highlighted the many ways she goes above and beyond for students and families. Mrs. Zessin created the "Barry’d Treasure Store," a student-run school store that teaches leadership, teamwork, and responsibility while helping provide school supplies for students in need. She also launched the Barry Bazaar, giving students experiencing financial hardship the opportunity to shop for gifts for their families during the holidays.

As a reading teacher, Mrs. Zessin is deeply committed to helping students grow in both skill and confidence. Her work has contributed to a decrease in students on reading success plans, while her strong collaboration with classroom teachers ensures students receive meaningful support as whole learners.

One student shared in her nomination, “I used to hate reading, but Ms. Zessin helped me so now I can read anything.”

Her colleagues described her as someone who embodies what it means to educate the whole child through compassion, innovation, and a belief that every student deserves to feel seen and supported.

Service Person of the Year: Erica Hopper

Erica Hopper has served the Northland Career Center community for five years, first as a Law Enforcement instructor and now as Marketing and Recruitment Specialist. Her nomination praised her extraordinary dedication to students, professionalism, and commitment to helping every student feel welcomed and valued at NCC.

Mrs. Hopper has played a key role in expanding outreach and recruitment efforts while mentoring student ambassadors and organizing major events including the College and Career Fair, Open House, and Mock Interviews. Her attention to detail and student-centered approach have elevated opportunities for students throughout the building.

One example highlighted in her nomination was her decision to personally hand write more than 150 invitations to prospective students after meeting them during middle school visits. Many students arrived at NCC’s Open House carrying the invitations, reflecting the meaningful impact of her outreach.

She has also helped expand internship opportunities for students, including securing paid law enforcement internships through professional partnerships.

Her colleagues shared that what truly distinguishes Mrs. Hopper is her heart for students and her intentional focus on ensuring students from all backgrounds feel represented, encouraged, and supported.

Congratulations!
